Why Quit?

 

Quitting tobacco use is one of the best things you can do, for yourself and your family.

 


 

For Yourself:

Better health
Live longer and reduce your risk of heart disease, cancer, stroke, emphysema, etc.
 
Increased stamina 
Exercise longer and improve your endurance by giving up tobacco.

Improved looks
Stopping smoking helps the skin stay healthy and young-looking.

More money
The money you save could boost your savings.

Better sex
Tobacco use is a significant cause of impotence.
 


For Your Family:
 
Protect them from second hand smoke. 
Your partner and kids could be at risk for lung cancer, asthma and heart disease because of your smoke.

Set the example. 
Keep your kids tobacco-free by being their positive role model.


 


 

 

Once You've Decided


Set a quit date, and stick to it. 
Choose a date, mark your calendar, and prepare to become smoke-free.
 
Tell friends and family about your decision to quit smoking.
Quitting isn't easy. You'll need the support of your friends and family to succeed. Remember to ask smokers not to offer you cigarettes or light up in your presence.
 
Throw away all your cigarettes, lighters, matches and ashtrays.
Reduce the temptation to light up by getting rid of all cigarettes and smoking paraphernalia.

Plan your quit strategies.
The urge to smoke is powerful. Prepare your strategies in advance to counter the craving for a cigarette.

Get help.
Talk to your doctor about quitting, and about medications than can double your chance of success. Find out where you can get help in Guam.

Reward yourself.
Plan a system of rewards for each milestone you reach without a cigarette.

Keep on track.
It’s difficult to quit, but it CAN be done.

The nicotine in cigarettes is powerfully addictive. Smoking is also a large part of many people's lives. Unfortunately, it can, and does, harm your health. And it kills.


 

 

HHS Smoking Cessations Mobile Apps

The Department of Health and Human Services offers various Smartphone applications that can assist individuals with refraining from smoking.  These Smoking Cessation apps provide strategies, tracking mechanisms and support.  They are designed to guide a smoking through various phases of quitting and staying smoke free.

This mobile app can help you prepare to quit smoking and support you in the days and weeks after you quit. It describes what problems you can expect when you quit smoking and includes interactive tips to keep you smoke free. With it you can save useful information in favorites and share what you’re reading via Facebook, Twitter, and e-mail.
